The GPRD and Academic Research
Welcome to the GPRD academic web page. This area of the website provides information specifically aimed at those interested in using GPRD data for academic research in primary care or public health. We intend to develop this page as a central resource for academic users of GPRD.
Please see 'Access for UK Academics via MRC agreement' for information on the MRC licence for academic research using GPRD.
The General Practice Research Database (GPRD) is the world's largest database of anonymised longitudinal medical records from primary care. Containing comprehensive observational data from clinical practice, it is a valuable tool for academic research in a broad range of areas including clinical epidemiology, disease patterns, disease management, outcomes research, and drug utilisation. The quality and reputation of the GPRD data make it an invaluable resource for researchers. There have been over 600 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Bibliography
The database is managed by the GPRD Group within the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the UK's medicines and devices regulator, on a non-profit making basis. The data are updated once every two weeks. GPRD data can be made available to customers via a secure online service to the live data called Full Feature GPRD (FF-GPRD), as project-specific raw data-sets or as aggregate tables.
